Waldien – Hajait Mndal - Asmara Choir
First written and performed by Hajait Mndal in 1988, Waldien is a Bilen song that means “parents.” In it, Hajait sings about leaving the warmth of her parents’ home to join the armed struggle. The song is about the difficult decision that the Tegadelti had to make to leave their homes and their parents in order to join the war. It’s an apology to all the par- ents left behind, but it’s also a song about hope. Hajait tells her parents that the end is near, that Eritrea will be freed soon and that she, and all the other Tegadelti, will finally be able to return home.
